Sparked by Curiosity, Shaped by Ambition: Jonty Bruggen’s Hospitality Journey
Jonty Bruggen, a recent graduate from the International Hotel School Johannesburg, recently shared his journey into the industry and his aspirations for the future. His story highlights how interest, education, and personal qualities shape the next generation of hospitality professionals.
Jonty’s love for cooking and experimenting with meals at home sparked his initial interest in the industry. “I’ve always enjoyed cooking and experimenting with different meals,” he explained. However, his decision to pursue a career in hospitality was further solidified by his educational experience, which provided a comprehensive understanding of various hotel and restaurant operations. “My studies gave me a solid foundation across almost every department in hospitality. It taught me what it takes to run a hotel or guesthouse efficiently and professionally,” he said.
When asked about his preferred area within hospitality, Jonty expressed a deep passion for travel. “It’s something I love. If I could just pack up and explore the world, I would,” he said eagerly, emphasizing his enthusiasm for immersing himself in new cultures and destinations.
Throughout his studies, Jonty developed key skills such as resilience, hard work, and the importance of work-life balance—traits he believes will make him stand out in the competitive industry. “Hard work is non-negotiable if you want to succeed,” he noted, adding that balancing personal relationships helps him stay grounded amid demanding work environments.
Reflecting on his personal qualities, Jonty highlighted his ability to thrive under pressure, his open-mindedness, and his strong work ethic—traits he considers vital in hospitality. Looking ahead, he envisions a future where he aims to become a top general manager, potentially running his own establishment someday. “Most people in this industry share the goal of becoming a hotel owner or a leading manager,” he shared.
Interestingly, Jonty’s initial interest in hospitality was not a childhood dream but stemmed from his high school subject, Consumer Studies. Although he originally aimed to pursue professional cookery, he challenged himself academically and chose a Bachelor of Business Administration in Hospitality Operations, which ultimately led him to his current educational path.
Jonty’s story exemplifies how a genuine passion coupled with practical education and personal qualities can pave the way for success in the vibrant world of hospitality.
