Rooted in Travel, Driven by Purpose: Roux-Ché Shidute’s Hospitality Journey

Roux-Ché Shidute, a recent graduate from Vatel Mauritius, has been inspired by a childhood filled with travel, family, and meaningful connections. Her journey into the hospitality industry illustrates a deep-rooted desire to create memorable experiences and contribute to the growth of African tourism.

Growing up helping at her parents’ bed and breakfast, Roux-Ché discovered her love for hospitality early on. “I enjoyed the breakfast rush and meeting guests from all walks of life,” she shared. Her most cherished memories, however, are her family road trips to iconic destinations such as Victoria Falls, Cape Town, and Botswana—moments filled with discovery and warm welcomes. These experiences motivated her to provide similar feelings of joy and belonging to others through hospitality.

Roux-Ché’s education at Vatel Mauritius combines theory with practical experience, allowing her to adapt quickly to diverse work environments. “Studying in Mauritius added an extra layer of growth, as I had to adjust to a new culture,” she noted. This balanced approach has prepared her well to navigate various aspects of hospitality, including customer service, team dynamics, and guest expectations.

Her favourite area within hospitality is now hospitality marketing. “I enjoy using insights gained from hotel experiences to connect with guests and excite them about their trips,” she explained. Her ability to communicate effectively has been strengthened through learning Mauritian Creole and French, skills that recently earned her an internship in France.

A natural people person, Roux-Ché values connection, empathy, and cultural diversity. Raised in a multilingual household, she appreciates the importance of communication and sustainable practices. “I care deeply about preserving the natural environments that attract travellers, especially in Africa,” she emphasised.

Looking ahead, Roux-Ché aspires to promote Namibia’s tourism and hospitality sector. “It’s incredibly fulfilling to give back to the country that shaped me,” she said. Her goal is to help position Namibia, and Africa as a whole, as a world-class destination that benefits communities and protects natural resources.

She chose Vatel Mauritius for its focus on practical learning and global network. “The program’s structure, with real hotel experience coupled with international connections, prepares us for the realities of the industry,” she explained.

Roux-Ché’s passion for hospitality continues to grow, fuelled by a desire to connect cultures, celebrate diversity, and promote sustainable tourism in Africa. Her journey highlights how early experiences and targeted education can shape the future leaders of the hospitality industry.
