Tropical Nites Theatre at Wild Coast Sun Gets a Million Rand Upgrade

The days of high-kicking dancing girls in glittery outfits may have gone the way of shoulder pads and perms, but the entertainment factor is back at Wild Coast Sun near Port Edward after the renovation of the Resort’s theatre.

“The South Coast’s entertainment hub” is how the Sun International Resort’s General Manager Peter Tshidi, describes the forthcoming line-up at the Tropical Nites theatre, which saw a R1.9 million upgrade during the first half of the year.

Michael Bester, well-known on the South Coast for hosting theatre productions and doing beach activations, has partnered with the resort’s entertainment team to manage theatre shows and resort activations to bring the best entertainment for hotel guests and day visitors.

“Tropical Nites’ renovation first entailed emptying the back-stage areas of props from shows in a bygone era,” Tshidi said. The 670-seat theatre has been repainted and refurbished in both front and back of house. State-of-the-art lighting and sound will ensure the spotlight remains on the artists as the brand-new curtains raise and fall.

“Tropical Nites can handle any kind of show and set, and we expect to see a full line-up of comedy, musicals, dance shows, beauty and talent pageants. These will be family-friendly shows as well as the glitzy spectacular shows.” A popular local Durban comedian is looking forward to a run at the theatre after seeing the renovations, and Wild Coast Sun is in talks with various other show organisers about hosting their talent. Award-winning South African comedian Carvin H Goldstone returns to the Wild Coast Sun to re-open the theatre on 2 September 2023, bringing some funny friends along – Thami Dlamini, Spencer Govender, Anele Mgewu and Robby Collins.

The casino’s Calypso Bar has also enjoyed a renovation, with a new bar area, the addition of a stage for live entertainment and two state-of-the-art 275-inch TV screens for sports lovers to catch their favourite teams on the field.

“With a brand-new sound system and lighting, Calypso Bar is the ideal place to take a break from the card tables or slot machines and have a light meal or a drink. We are always looking to create better experiences for our customers and now those who enjoy sport and live entertainment don’t have to leave the casino,” Tshidi said. Calypso Bar has weekly live entertainment on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and every last Friday of the month is Karaoke night.

“Wild Coast Sun wants our guests to love every moment – have fun and go home with great memories.”
