Tourism: A Cornerstone of South Africa’s Economic Growth and Job Creation
As South Africa rebounds from global economic pressures, the tourism sector emerges not just as a recovery mechanism but as a dynamic driver of inclusive and sustainable growth.
In 2024 the country welcomed over 10 million international visitors, a 28% increase from the previous year, injecting billions of Rand into local economies and stimulating vital sectors such as hospitality, transportation, culture and retail. This resurgence has reinforced tourism’s contribution of approximately 3.7% to the national GDP, with projections for 2025 showing even greater potential.
Minister of Tourism, Patricia de Lille was recently quoted as saying “tourism is more than just about leisure; it is a lifeline for millions of South Africans.
“From small townships to major cities, tourism-related activities empower local entrepreneurs, support cultural heritage, and create jobs in every province,” she added.
Renee Hill, MD of the IIE School of Hospitality & Service Management (IIEHSM) concurs.
“The tourism industry currently sustains over 1.5 million direct and indirect jobs across the country, making it one of South Africa’s most accessible employment sectors.
“Our unique natural landscapes, vibrant cultural experiences and warm hospitality remain powerful drawcards in a highly competitive global market. With global tourism trends favouring authentic, sustainable travel, the country is well positioned to benefit from a new wave of environmentally and socially conscious travellers.”
Which is why the courses offered by the school are all increasingly relevant and essential for anyone wanting a career in the tourism industry.
Says Hill: “The government’s continued investment in infrastructure, training and destination marketing is expected to generate an additional 500,000 jobs by 2030 and we at IIEHSM want to ensure we are producing graduates who will be well equipped to take up any of those roles that will become available over the next five years.”
IIEHSM currently offers eight different courses including the IIEHSM Bachelor of Service Management; the IIEHSM Advanced Certificate in Hospitality Management; the IIEHSM Bachelor of Hospitality Management; the IIEHSM Higher Certificate in Hospitality Management; the IIEHSM Higher Certificate in Service Management; the IIEHSM Advanced Diploma in Hospitality Leadership; the IIEHSM Higher Certificate in Event Management; the IIEHSM Higher Certificate in Travel.
