Known as the ‘Game of Kings’, polo is one of the oldest team sports in history and is thought to have originated in China and Persia. According to the SA Polo Association website, Polo was invented 2,500 years ago as a cavalry training exercise. Remarkably the traditional game has not changed much over the years, including the tradition of wearing white pants, which dates back to the 19th century when Indian royals played in the heat, hence the preference for fabrics that were light in colour and weight. In another polo tradition, to this day the crowd activity of divot-stomping at half-time is not just for show, but genuinely to restore the field for the players and horses!
