Sun City’s Famous Water Resort Closes For Annual Maintenance

Last few weeks of soaking up sunshine and adrenaline-filled rides

One of South Africa’s most popular water theme parks, the Valley of Waves at Sun City Resort in the North West, will close for annual maintenance ahead of the June school holidays.

Guests and day visitors are advised to get their last splashes in before the annual closure from May 13 until June 21.

Body surf to the shore on the Roaring Lagoon, which offers bender waves every 90 seconds that rise two metres in the air. For an adrenaline rush, take the Temple of Courage down a 70m drop, or one of two body slides – the Tarantula and the Scorpion. Slightly less courage is required for the Viper and Mamba tube rides, but they promise just as many whoops of joy. There is also the Chimp & Zee Rope Adventure Park, which offers an elevated obstacle course including high balancing beams, speedy zip lines, hanging spider nets, jungle rope bridges and much more, in and around the water park.

Those who need some time out can laze on a sun lounger beneath the palm trees or enjoy a cocktail and a snack at the beach bar. Kids will tire themselves out in the designated children’s area and rides like the Lazy River while having the time of their lives.

“While our water park closes annually to ensure that it remains in a world-class condition, guests need not fear, Sun City has a long list of other fun water sports and activities available for the whole family,” said Brett Hoppé, the Resort General Manager.

The man-made Waterworld Lake alone offers more activities than can be done in a day. “Whether you prefer to ski, cruise or glide over water you can do it all, located in front of the rolling lawns of the Cabanas Hotel.”

Feel the cool spray against your face as you race about on a jet ski, alone or with a partner, or grab onto the handles of an inflatable ring while being towed behind a boat for a fun-filled, adrenaline-pumping tube ride. Up to four tubes can be towed per ride, which makes this a great experience for family or a group of friends.

For a more extreme experience opt for a water snake ride. Straddle an inflatable pencil-shaped pontoon with handles and hold on tight for a bumpy ride for up to five people.

You don’t need any experience to try your hand (or legs) at water-skiing and wakeboarding, as Waterworld offers lessons with instructors on land first before accompanying you out on the water.

Experience the exhilaration of flight as you parasail effortlessly 35 meters in the air. Drink in the magnificent views across Sun City, before gently landing back onto the water. Double the excitement by going up in pairs, either side by side or in tandem.

But if you’re looking for a more relaxed experience look no further than a cruise around the lake at your leisure.

Climb aboard a private cruise boat for either a 30 or 60-minute cruise. Cruises accommodate up to nine people plus the skipper. Alternatively, join 30-minute public cruise and put your feet up while the skipper tells you about the history of Sun City and points out the bird life that live along the shores of the lake.

Or be your own skipper and paddle around the lake in a pedal boat while you spot fish and bird life. Children under 18 need to be accompanied by an adult, but you can also make it a romantic couple’s experience.

Those who prefer to stay dry can participate in a Kazooma Raceway experience, ride on the Stimela Train, or enjoy Rock Venture Mini Golf.
