Only Four Weeks to go Until the 14th Edition of Powerade Marakele Marathon

South African National Parks (SANParks) together with the SANParks Honorary Rangers and Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa are once again hosting the 14th edition of the Powerade Marakele Marathon. The marathon will take place on Saturday, 4 March 2023 at the scenic Marakele National Park outside Thabazimbi in Limpopo. Marakele National Park is a “Big 5 park” and for the past five years, each year has been dedicated to a member of the Big 5 animals.

The 14th edition of the Powerade Marakele Marathon marks the 5th race in the Big 5 Series – the “Year of the elephant”. The route takes runners on a scenic adventure through the park, with the SANParks rangers and Honorary Rangers on hand for support.

Koketso Kotsoe, Marakele National Park Manager said, “The marathon has been happening for 13 years and last year, it was attended by over 882 participants from various provinces across the country and neighbouring countries despite the Covid-19 restrictions and a huge thunderstorm the morning of the race. The marathon is a significant event for runners since it serves as a qualifying race for the Comrades Marathon and the Two-Oceans Marathon, in addition to providing access for runners to enjoy South Africa’s natural heritage.

Linda Appie, Channel Development Specialist, Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa said “Powerade is the perfect sports drink before, during or after your workout that ensures you’re beating your best. We are pleased to announce that we have renewed our partnership as title sponsor of the Powerade Marakele Marathon for the next four years”.

Johan van der Merwe, Chairman of the Honorary Rangers, Marakele Region added that “there will also be a handover ceremony of the new swimming pool at Marakele National Park after the marathon. The swimming pool was donated by Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa and the SANParks Honorary Rangers (Johannesburg, Magalies, Midrand and Pretoria regions). The pool is for the exclusive use of resident guests in the park. Day visitors are not permitted to use the pool. The swimming pool will immensely add to the guest experience especially during the very hot summer months.”

Entries are still open and participants can choose to enter the full marathon 42.2 km, a half marathon (21.1km) or the 10 km race.  In addition, a 5 km fun run for the whole family is included, which is very popular among children and casual supporters. The race offers prize money of more than R50 000.
